Klimt and Emilie: A Painter and His Muse Details
From Library Journal This book is based on correspondence and photographs that, as a part of leading fashion designer Floge's estate, only became available in 1981. The photos are wonderful, and the story illuminates the relationship between Floge, Klimt, and the Wiener Werkstatte, an organization of designers and craftsmen established in Vienna in 1903. Because Klimt was a leader in the Vienna Secessionist movement, this study not only illuminates the relationship between the artist and the designer who inspired him, clarifying their contributions to art, but also reveals an important aspect of that revolutionary art movement. Because the illustrations are worth seeing and the story both fascinating and important, it is unfortunate that the author's writing is very difficult to follow; it is hardly idiomatic English. Nevertheless, the book is worth reading and should be included in every serious art library.- Martin Chasin, Adult Inst., Bridgeport, Ct.Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.
