A Child’s Dream of a Star (Annotated) Details

“A Child’s Dream of a Star” is a short story written by English author Charles Dickens (1812-1870). First published in 1836, it is a tale full of melancholy. It is centered on a child who loses her sister and finds a sort of relief looking at the star which they were used to watch together. This edition also contains the beautiful biography “Charles Dickens” written by English writer Gilbert K. Chesterton (1874-1936) in 1906.

Reviews

This story is included in the "Weird Tales" anthology and why? I do not see why this could be in something which is generally ghost and horror stories. This is Dickens at his most saccharine. A pair of siblings look each night for a star to appear, continuing the practice even as one grows ill and dies. The star connects the surviving sibling to the heavenly spirit of the dead sibling, who repeatedly tells him it is not time even as the rest of the family drops like flies. Until finally, one day, he gets to join them again and I just rolled my eyes.I saw someone say in their review that it would be a good bedtime story for kids, but no. No no. Don't read this to kids, hearing about family members dying and not being able to join them will be nothing to comfort them to sleep, what are you doing? The story is in the public domain, so you can get it for free from sites like Project Gutenberg and Librivox. I listened to the audio production from Librivox.
